PHILIP ABRAMOWITZ BUFFALO GROVE COMMUNITY HEBREW SCHOOL The Philip Abramowitz Buffalo Grove Community Hebrew School, under the auspices of the Associated Talmud Torahs of Chicago, is our after school educational program of which we are very proud. The goal of the Philip Abramowitz Buffalo Grove Community Hebrew School is to produce a students who are comfortable and competent in participating -and in some cases- leading daily and Shabbat services. During the five years in Hebrew School, each student will learn to read Hebrew, translate portions of the Torah, learn about Jewish history, customs, traditions and develop the skills necessary to be comfortable in a Jewish and synagogue setting. Our school begins with Kindergarten age children who, along with first and second grade children, attend our Sunday School program for one and a half hours on Sunday mornings. From third grade and up (our Alef class) students attend three days a week for a total of 4-6 hours weekly. Students who are approaching Bar/Bat Mitzvah age work with special instructors to prepare for their celebration. Our school year runs from after Labor Day through the first week in June. For further information about the school and programs, please contact the Principal of the School, Rabbi Saul Schwartz at 773-973-0212 or 847-634-3234. MELVIN I. EISENBERG INSTITUTE FOR JUDAIC STUDIES We are proud to host a branch of the Associated Talmud Torahs' Hebrew High School. Classes are taught at our synagogue on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings. Course offerings include Hebrew language, Traditional Judaic texts, Jewish history, Jewish philosophy and the popular "Meal & Shpeal." For further information, please contact the Principal of the school, Mrs. Rouhama Garelick at 773-973-2828. SAMUEL AND ROSE ABRAMOWITZ SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Samuel and Rose Abramowitz Award was established in 1990 by synagogue Trustee, Mr. Seymour J. Abrams, in memory of his parents. This scholarship is designated yearly to the continuing education of young Jewish minds and is awarded to an outstanding young person from our shul who has demonstrated a commitment to Jewish education and who has achieved a high level of performance in our community. Past winners have been:
Once a month, the Daven, Eat and Learn program will improve your Sunday mornings by feeding your soul, your body and your mind (in that order!)
These presentations are held on Sundays. We begin with morning minyan (9:00 a.m.) and breakfast.(9:45 a.m.). The presentation will run from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.. There is a charge to cover breakfast. For further information, please contact the shul office. HISTORY AS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE Audio cassette tapes by Rabbi Berel Wein If you don't have time to read, listen to history come alive on tape! Rabbi Wein, noted scholar and world-renowned lecturer, presents a complete oral history of the Jewish people. Tapes are available at the shul. TORAH LEARNING CENTER OF BUFFALO GROVE The Torah Learning Center of Buffalo Grove, in conjunction with Congregation B'nai Shalom, provides a variety of classes, both at the shul and at other locations in the area. Email the Torah Learning Center or call them at 847-215-7664 to register. Stay up with us as we listen, learn, discuss and fulfill the traditions of Shavout. Our program will include davening, lectures, and refreshments. Another great way to send your son or daughter to Israel is via the Send-a-Kid-to-Israel Program (S.K.I.P.). B'nai Shalom, together with the Jewish Federation of Chicago, offers a joint program with you to save for your child's trip to Israel. Young people who participate in the Program for the full seven years (grades 3 through 9) will have approx. $2000 available, including interest, to help meet the cost of a program in Israel during their high school years. The beautiful part of this is that the Shul and Jewish Federation will fund 2/3rd of the cost. This program is available to all member families of the Shul. Please call 312-444-2895 for an application or contact Gerry Cizek for more details. HONORING AND REMEMERING AN IMPORTANT DATE There are many ways to remember a simcha, a loved one, a birthday, an anniversary or a yahrzeit. One special way is through sponsoring an educational event or program in that person's name. It could be a donation to a special Shul Fund, the tape of a lecture here at Shul, a siddur for Shabbat, a class, a children's event, an Oneg Shabbat or a Kiddush after services. By performing this special Mitzvah, you raise our Shul and you raise the name of the one you love. This year we are still seeking funds for the CBS Freedom Library. Each shelf, adult book and children's book will be specially dedicated. Please call us at the shul office for more information.
